Final Fantasy 16 Has To Be More “Fantasy” Than Sci-Fi, FFXIV’s Game Director Believes

Initially, the first Final Fantasy titles were purely fantasy games with storylines to match that. Even more, the first game of the popular franchise that rolled out to western markets, Final Fantasy 4, was hardcore fantasy. But that’s not alright, believes Final Fantasy 14’s game director Naoki Yoshida. He said that Final Fantasy 16, the upcoming title in the franchise, has to be more fantasy than sci-fi.

But, starting with the seventh installment in the series, Final Fantasy turned to sci-fi. Final Fantasy 7, 8, 13, and 15 are excellent examples of how Final Fantasy moved away from fantasy-based storyline to science fiction.

FFXIV’s Game Director Believes That Final Fantasy 16 Has To Be More “Fantasy” Than Sci-Fi

Naoki Yoshida was the director of the successful MMO Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn. He believes that Final Fantasy 16 has to come back to the original fantasy that made the game so famous rather than continuing with the science fiction theme adopted since Final Fantasy 7.

“You guys are asking some tough questions. That’s funny, I thought FanFests were supposed to be fun, but here we are with this super hard question. First, if you’re asking whether the Final Fantasy series will get another MMO soon, I think the chances are unlikely so long as Final Fantasy XIV is doing well. On that note, personally speaking, I’d like to see a [Final Fantasy 16] that is straightforward fantasy, one that doesn’t have much machinery, and with no mecha in it,” Naoki Yoshida explained his feelings about the future of the Final Fantasy series during the Silconera fan fest.

Final Fantasy 16 Release Date

We have no clue when Final Fantasy 16 would come out, but according to some recent reports, Square Enix, the devs of the franchise, is now hiring next-gen developers. That might mean that Square Enix plans to launch Final Fantasy 16 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Scarlett.

If that it’s indeed correct, then we might see Final Fantasy 16 launch after 2021 when both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Scarlett would be available.
