Lionel Messi had two goals and an assist in Inter Miami CF’s 4-0 win over Atlanta United on Tuesday (July 25) at DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. This was the first time either Messi or Sergio Busquets had started for Inter Miami CF since joining the MLS club. That’s pretty much amazing! After cruising through its group with a perfect record, Miami has advanced to the group of 32 in the Leagues Cup and will play host to one of the remaining teams.

It was a good performance, and I’m pleased we were able to make our fans happy. A very good game, and we took another step in the right direction, stated Gerardo Martino, the Miami manager.

More details below.

In the 22nd minute of the Leagues Cup match, Messi added another goal on a counterattack to increase the gap with the help from Robert Taylor, who tallied Miami’s third to give the club a 3-0 lead going into halftime.

And here’s something truly incredible: Messi scored a goal against the 100th different team when he did it against Atlanta.

After the game, Martino stated that he wasn’t shocked to see Messi and Busquets unite for the opening goal because he handled both of them during their time at Barcelona. On Friday (July 21), the two players made their first appearances in a thrilling victory over Cruz Azul.

What are your thoughts about Lionel Messi’s arrival and performance at Inter Miami? What would you like to see in the future?

In the first-ever Leagues Cup competition, which is modeled after the World Cup and features teams from MLS and Liga MX, Miami, and Atlanta are now competing against one another. On August 20, Messi might make his first appearance in an official Major League Soccer game when his team plays host to Charlotte.
