A rising female character who recently joined Overwatch Contenders has created some buzz within the game’s community. Apparently, the female gamer that went by the name of Ellie was, in reality, a fraudulent account operated by a male player, as confirmed by Blizzard the game’s dev and the operator of the Overwatch Contenders.
In December, the Overwatch Contenders team known as Second Wind welcomed Ellie, as they believed that she was an excellent female gamer. Since she has joined Second Wind, many Overwatch players questioned her true identity. However, she requested to remain anonymous, a demand that appeared harmless to Second Wind.
Eventually, Ellie announced on her Twitter account that she decided to quit Second Wind, a decision that came right after the Overwatch Contenders team was trying to prepare her for interviews and live streams. That was an awkward decision from Ellie, and players have started to ask more questions about her true identity.
Overwatch Contenders Female Gamer, Ellie, Was a Fake Person
Soon after her departure from the Second Wind team, Ellie created a new social media account. The players observed that she had not had much gaming experience, so Overwatch Contenders gamers started to believe Ellie was not who she says she is.
“Due to the fact that we do not have any physical contact with our players, we wanted to verify their identity but also wanted to respect their privacy as well. We genuinely had no idea of what was to come, and at the time we underestimated how important it would be to set an example as the first team to take on a female player for Overwatch Contenders,” explained Second Wind team.
In the end, due to Ellie’s case, Blizzard might adopt stricter Overwatch Contenders policies since fake identities keep to be a real issue in esports.
