The first details about Sony’s next-generation console have already been released. The PlayStation 5 will have PS4 backward compatibility, will come with an SSD storage, and support PSVR. A specific price dot hasn’t been unveiled yet, but the new console won’t be launched before April 2020.
Mark Cerny has refused to exactly call the console ‘PlayStation 5’ yet, referring to it as ‘the next generation console’ so we are calling it PS5 is a short-hand title.
PlayStation 5 Release Date
John Kodera, the head of PlayStation back in 2018 said that PS5 was ‘three years away.’ Plans change, however, and the rumors were flying up and above saying that the PS5 will be released as soon as 2019.
PlayStation 5 Price
Sony hasn’t given a statement announcing the price or so, but it did say that the PS5’s price will be attractive to the fans. The company might have learned from the PS3’s outrageous price tag experiences and the PS4’s more affordable price and consecutive successes.
Will PS5 Be Backwards Compatible With PS4 games?
Mark Cerny also confirmed the PS5 would be backward suitable with PS4 games because the two consoles are designed with similar architectures. The PS4 games will even run faster than they do on any other console, mostly because the PS5 will have a solid state drive, not hard drives that current consoles come with.

The company has admitted that the PS5 will have an AMD chip that has a CPU based on the third generation Ryzen, with eight cores of the seven-nanometer Zen microchip. PS5 will also be backing 8K gameplay. The graphics will be conducted by a custom variant of Radeon’s Navi line, and the graphics chip will come with ray tracing. PS5 will, in fact, support 3D audio.
The SSD we mentioned before is a huge detail too. It means that games will load at a higher speed and be able to manage more objects on screen at the same time, comparing with the current HDD driven devices.
The PS5 won’t be like the Xbox One S All-Digital Edition which doesn’t have a disc drive, but it will include it so you will be able to purchase and play from physical games. The discs could handle 4K UHD Blu-Rays which can support twice as much data as regular Blu-Ray discs, but this matter hasn’t been addressed on by Sony either.
Will PS5 Support PSVR?
Yes, PlayStation 5 will support PSVR, as will the PlayStation Move controllers. Mark Cerny stated that VR is essential to their strategy and the current PSVR headset is fitting with the new console.
