Top Historical Movies to See in a Lifetime

Watching a good movie in the evening after a long day at work is certainly priceless, but what can you do when your watchlist is empty? Chernobyl (2019)

‘Chernobyl’ is a mini TV series of 5 episodes, each one having about an hour, that was produced by HBO and launched in 2019. This production accurately shows what happened in 1986 in Ukraine, when one of the most devastating nuclear accidents took place. ‘Chernobyl’ shows everything you need to see from a historical standpoint, while it also doesn’t shy away from showing how terrifying radiation can be for the human body.

If you’re at least a bit passionate about physics and nuclear power plants, this movie is definitely for you.

Oppenheimer (2023)

Speaking of nuclear physics, we can’t help but mention this movie that came out this year. ‘Oppenheimer’ presents how the first atomic bomb was created, as well as the struggles of J. Robert Oppenheimer when he realized what his Earth-shaking invention could do. This 2023 movie presents the story in a historically accurate manner, and yes, we know what you’re thinking! If you want to see detonations of nuclear bombs, this movie has one for you!

Hacksaw Ridge (2016)

Directed by Mel Gibson, ‘Hacksaw Ridge’ presents the true story of Desmond Doss, who wanted to serve his country on the battlefield of the Battle of Okinawa of World War II as a medic without carrying a weapon. Guided by his strong Christian beliefs, Desmond, played by Andrew Garfield, had to face significant persecution for his stubbornness in refusing to carry a weapon during a war.

The Pianist (2002)

Directed by Roman Polanski, “The Pianist” presents the true story of a jew who had to do his best to survive in the midst of World War II as the Nazis were after him in the ruins of Warsaw. The main role is played by Adrien Brody, who probably makes the performance of his life. This movie is simply unforgettable, as the level of detail for the tragedy of the Jewish people in the face of the Nazi regime is outstanding. One of the most memorable scenes from “The Pianist,” and probably in the history of cinema, was when a Nazi officer decided to help the prosecuted jew after the former played a song on the piano.

Stalingrad (1993)

If you somehow believe that the Germans have no idea how to create amazing war movies, you just have to watch “Stalingrad” from 1993, as it will definitely change your mind! As you’ve probably already guessed, this movie focuses on the Battle of Stalingrad from WWII, one of the bloodiest battles in the history of the world. A group of German soldiers are under the spotlight for this movie, and the main roles are played by actors such as Dominique Horwitz, Thomas Kretschmann, Jochen Nickel, and Sebastian Rudolph.

The Patriot (2000)

With Mel Gibson in the main role of a peaceful farmer known as Benjamin Martin, this movie presents his struggles and quest to lead the Colonial Militia during the American Revolution when a British officer known as Col. William Tavington (played by Jason Isaacs) kills his son.
