During a recent interview with GameSpot at PAX Aus, Id Software head and a Quake pioneer dev, Tim Willits, discussed the Battle Royale craze. According to him, both Fortnite and PUBG, among others, are scoring big profits with an idea that’s not new at all.
Tim Willits reminded that the first community-made Quake mode was a “last-man-standing” game mode similar to what we now see in Fortnite and PUBG. “People need to realize; it’s been done before through modes like King of the Hill and others. It’s a new take done well on an idea that people already like,” said Willits for GameSpot.
He continued by stating that “every great video game idea can be found in a 10-year-old’s toy box. That continues with games like Battle Royale. It’s not really that new. It’s like dodgeball – there’s only one person left. That’s Battle Royale. So the best games in the future will continue to be new takes on ideas that people already like.”
Fortnite and PUBG, and other Battle Royale titles are just a new take of an old idea, said Tim Willits, head o Id Software and Quake dev
There were many examples of Battle Royale-like titles released way before Fortnite and PUBG. However, the genre’s fame skyrocketed with the two before-mentioned titles, and the craze is increasing with the arrival of new games in the same lines, such as Call of Duty Black Ops 4 with its Blackout and Battlefield V with its Firestorm game mode.
Also, when asked if Id Software plans to join the Battle Royale craze, Willits suggested, elegantly, that the all frenzy surrounding this genre might die in a few years before the company would roll out a Battle Royale game.
Also, the statements of Tim Willits, head of Id Software and Quake pioneer dev, match those of Strauss Zelnick, the head of Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Rockstar Games. He said that he “would just observe that someone else’s success is really interesting and we are obviously informed by what our competitors do. But our goal is to be as innovative as possible.”
