According to some comments of a Google engineer, Google is now working on a 2019 Pixel the new phone from the company. We found out that the new handset could have support for dual SIM. This means that Google Pixel 4 would work with two different cellular carriers simultaneously, instead of having just one – so forcing you to choose one.
The devices have the SIM card slot and the eSIM, but there’s no room for the both of them
The dual-SIM functionality is actually active on Google Pixel 3, which means that Google is already testing it on a phone you are using today. Both Google Pixel 2 and Google Pixel 3 have the physical SIM card slot and the eSIM, but you cannot have them both active at the same time. It’s simply not how the latest iPhones work.
There are other Android devices that have no problem with this, and it is actually very useful for some people. It’s a very common thing to switch between networks in order to get the best data rate, and it’s a very good thing to do especially when you’re traveling. The fact that Google Pixel 3 does not have two SIMs active kind of tangle people.
However, this is set to come to the devices by default in 2019. It’s actually a requirement to differentiate 2018 Pixel – which comes with 2 SIM cards, but the dual SIM functionality is restricted – from the 2019 Pixel – which will definitely come with the dual SIM functionality.
You should keep in mind that there are many ways to handle dual-SIM functionality. One of them is DSDA (Dual SIM Dual Active), where both of the SIM cards are good to be used for text, calls, and data. Another one is DSDS (Dual SIM Dual Standby), where the second SIM can only receive text and calls, and it’s not fully active.
