Fortnite Grossed $3 Billion in 2018 For Epic Games

According to a report on TechCrunch, which cited an undisclosed source, Epic Games grossed $3 billion in 2018 thanks to Fortnite, the most popular Battle Royale game in the world, at this moment. However, Epic Games did not confirm the information.

Fortnite, which is available on virtually any current-generation video games platforms, such as PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC and Android and iOS, is a free-to-play game but one which, reportedly, scored billions via its in-app purchases.

“We realized that the business really needed to change its approach quite significantly. We were seeing some of the best games in the industry being built and operated as live games over time rather than big retail releases. We recognized that the ideal role for Epic in the industry is to drive that,” said Tom Sweeney, Epic Games CEO, referring to a new business model of releasing free games which make money via in-app purchases.

Fortnite Grossed $3 Billion in 2018 For Epic Games

Even though Epic Games has not confirmed the information, that 3 billion dollars figure would make sense thinking that Fortnite totals more than 125 million players from all over the world. Also, as Fortnite is a cross-platform game, it’s challenging to aggregate all the revenues for statistical purposes.

The last time we had a real estimate was in May when Super Data Research concluded that Fortnite grossed more than $318 million at that time. Besides, according to SensorTower, between April and November 2018, Fortnite scored 385 million dollars on iOS.

But let’s get some credit to the undisclosed source that TechCrunch cited. According to that source, Fortnite grossed $3 billion in 2018 for Epic Games. On the other hand, Epic Games is not only relying on Fortnite, although it is the most successful game of the studio, at the moment. Besides Fortnite, Epic Games scores big with other titles, its Unreal Engine, and also with its recently launched game store.
