Nintendo Switch Surpassed Both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One Sales Figures In January 2019

The last year was excellent for the gaming industry and hardware manufacturers, as well, and it would be challenging for 2019 to compete with 2018, despite the many new games that are about to come this year. However, Nintendo Switch maintained its supremacy over both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One sales figures in January 2019.

According to industry-tracking firm The NPD Group, Nintendo Switch outsold PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in the United States, selling more video game console units than Sony and Microsoft. Despite being younger than PS4 and Xbox One, Nintendo Switch is more successful thanks to the fact that it is a hybrid home-handheld console which attracts the gamers more. Also, it received some excellent exclusive titles in late 2018, including Super Smash Bros Ultimate, one of the most popular games of the moment.

The success Nintendo Switch scored over both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One is even of a greater significance when thinking that Sony’s and Microsoft’s consoles received highly anticipated games such as Resident Evil 2 Remake and Kingdom Hearts 3.

Nintendo Switch Surpassed Both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One Sales Figures In January 2019

“Nintendo Switch was the best-selling hardware platform of January 2019. Both in dollar and unit sales. Nintendo Switch was the only console platform to show year-on-year sales growth,” said  NPD analyst Mat Piscatella.

On the other hand, “hardware spending in January 2019 declined 28 percent when compared to a year ago, to $199 million. But total hardware dollar sales were the second highest total achieved since the $239 million reached in January 2014,” Piscatella said. Also, “total spending on accessories and game cards fell 12 percent in January 2019 when compared to a year ago, to $267 million. Slight gains in gamepad spending were offset by declines across other accessory segments and game cards,” he added.

Undoubtedly, Nintendo Switch kept its momentum and sold better than PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in January 2018. But, according to market analysts, that might change soon, thanks to Apex Legends which launched for PS4, Xbox One, and PC, and it’s already a very popular Battle Royale game.
