If you’re also a fan of those games in which all Hell breaks loose, unleashing the most terrifying, horrendous, and disgusting creatures, it means you should definitely give Zombie Army 4: Dead War a try. Developed and published by the British company Rebellion as a spin-off of the Sniper Elite series, this game came out at the best moment possible, when gamers were more tucked into their houses than ever: in February 2020, when COVID lockdowns were everywhere.
“Zombie Army 4: Dead War” presents a similar world as its predecessor games do: Hitler losing World War II and reaching for the ultimate ace up his sleeve. He signs a contract with evil and gets his army transformed into zombies. It’s up to the player to get in the shoes of Karl Fairburne or some other characters to teach those zombies some manners while sending them back to Hell. There are lots of ways to kill those zombies, as this game proposes many hours of fun if you’re into the zombie-killing business.
I’ve been playing “Zombie Army 4: Dead War” enough so that I can write an objective and competent review of the game. Let’s cut to the chase:
Graphics:
The graphics in Zombie Army 4 are pretty much flawless, similar to many modern games. It’s enough to take a look at the system requirements of the game to realize that it’s true. You need a graphics card at least as good as NVIDIA GT 1030 2GB (or AMD equivalent) and 60GB of free storage space. That’s about the same storage space as GTA 5 demands, which means a lot for a zombie-killing game. There are plenty of places to explore in Zombie Army 4, as many Italian cities are teeming with zombies that you need to kill. There are also lots of collectibles, and you can even kill rats and other disgusting creatures for extra points.
No grievances in the graphics area, so let’s move on.
Gameplay:
The gameplay itself in Zombie Army 4 is a load of fun. You get to play the campaign mode alone or in co-op with a friend. There are multiple characters to choose from, as you don’t only get to use Karl Fairburne, the usual protagonist of Sniper Elite and Zombie Army games. The devs seem to be willing to support diversity a lot in this game, as you can also get in the shoes of a black guy, a black woman, an Asian woman, a Russian guy, and even a zombie if you want. Yes, you can become a zombie to kill zombies, as not all zombies are evil in this game.
The iconic kill cam is also there in this game as well, which means that you can watch the bullet in slow-motion as it pierces the organs of your zombie victims. It won’t work all of the time – only when you fire a truly exciting shot with your sniper.
Upgrading and customizing your weapons in Zombie Army 4: Dead War is another fun experience, as you can make those killing machines better or add an extra flavor by options for some very cool-looking coloring options. For instance, you can put the American flag on the M1 Carbine sniper rifle.
As you progress through the game, you’ll notice that not all the zombies will come empty-handed. Similarly to previous games of the series, some zombies in Zombie Army 4 will carry weapons. Some of them will come at you with a flamethrower and super-heavy machine guns. As soon as you kill those zombies (which is a big “if”), you can grab their weapons and start playing around with them. Trust me, few things are more satisfying in the life of a gamer than burning zombies alive with the flamethrower!
Conclusion
Zombie Army 4: Dead War is one of the best zombie-killing games that I’ve played, and it’s certainly one of the best ever. There are way too many zombie-killing games out there to say for sure which one is the best, but what’s for sure is that Zombie Army 4 is definitely the best game of the Zombie Zrmy series. It adds more details to each level, more terrifying and battling zombies, and more ways to get rid of them. The game focuses a lot more on the melee attacks as well, as there are far more ways to kill a zombie in this game compared to any other game of the series. You can even unlock more melee attacks as you progress through the game.
Boss fights represent another aspect where Zombie Army 4 truly shines. The bosses in this game are more thrilling than ever, and it’s always nice to see bosses in modern games, something that it often forgotten by most devs nowadays. That brings back that retro feeling of how video games used to be back in the day, as most of them had a boss waiting for you at the end of each level. You couldn’t get to the next level if you didn’t defeat the boss.
I’m sure “Zombie Army 4” also has a great replay value, as I’ll be playing it long after I finish the story mode. Great game from the guys from Rebellion!
