Google could launch the first Pixel foldable screen phone

The new Pixel model with the signature ‘Made by Google’ could be unveiled later this year, as an affordable foldable phone.

According to rumors, Google has already selected Samsung Display as the supplier of OLED screens for the new foldable phone from the Pixel series.

The first clues about Google’s plan appeared at the end of last year, when an Android document mentioned an alleged foldable phone, developed for 2021 under the code name “passport”. In the meantime, more information has appeared about it, indicating the screen provider and display diagonal. Thus, the latest rumors place Samsung Display in the role of supplier for several manufacturers of folding phones, Oppo and Xiaomii being only two of the beneficiaries, plus Google.s

Oppo would launch a foldable phone based on the clamshell format, containing a narrower screen, but with a diagonal of 7.7 inches. For comparison, the next Galaxy Z Flip model is described with a 6.7-inch screen and a slightly more compact construction. At the other extreme is Xiaomi, the Chinese manufacturer selecting an 8.03-inch foldable screen, complemented by a 6.38-inch secondary screen.

Although the folding phone market is currently dominated by Samsung, the manufacturers’ hierarchy seems to be changing in the next period. The main promoter of these changes is Samsung itself, the company choosing to continue to make profits from the privileged role of the supplier of OLED screens.

Overall, more diversity in the folding phone market cannot hurt, with competition from Chinese manufacturers having the best chance of bringing prices to an affordable area and for consumers on a budget.
