Grant Williams’ Sign-and-trade to Mavs is Happening, Leaving Boston Celtics

As part of a three-team sign-and-trade arrangement that also includes the Boston Celtics and the San Antonio Spurs, the Dallas Mavericks and Grant Williams are working to finalize a contract that will pay $53 million over the course of four years. According to Bobby Marks of ESPN, the Celtics will also receive a trade exception valued at $6.2 million.

The acquisition of Williams, a hefty 24-year-old reserve player who averaged 8.1 points and 4.6 rebounds for the Celtics last season while shooting 39.5% from 3-point range on 3.7 efforts per game, provides Dallas with a young, adaptable 3-and-D ahead who should be an ideal addition to the Mavericks’ star-studded backcourt of Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving. Williams recorded 8.1 points and 4.6 rebounds for the Celtics this past season.

Williams, who was selected 22nd overall by the NBA in the 2019 draft after playing college basketball at the University of Tennessee, has been an integral part of the Boston Celtics’ march to the NBA Finals and the Eastern Conference finals in both of the last two seasons.

By completing a sign-and-trade with Williams, Dallas was able to maintain access to their entire midlevel exception, which provides the team with the opportunity to acquire another player via free agency.

What are your thoughts so far about Dallas Mavericks’ agreement?

As Dallas looks to rebound from last year’s disappointing 11th-place result in the Western Conference, which prevented the Mavericks from qualifying for the play-in tournament, the Mavericks are hoping Williams will be a terrific deal for the team.

The Mavericks have been quite active this offseason, as they have re-signed Kyrie Irving to a three-year agreement, completed two draft-night deals to end up with two sets of first-round choices (Dereck Lively II and Olivier Maxence-Prosper), and recruited guard Seth Curry. This offseason has been a very busy one for the Mavericks.
