A few years ago the Fairphone made the news for being a modular smartphone that allowed users to replace integral components. However, we haven’t heard anything about these phones in quite some time, and the Fairphone 2, the last Fairphone, was launched back in 2015.
It appears that the company managed to surprise us once again, and Fairphone 2 becomes the first Snapdragon 801 smartphone that will receive the Android 7.0 Nougat update. There are no other phones using a Snapdragon 801 that have this Android update.
Tricky update
It won’t be easy to make this update go. The testing process will be quite different from other Android phones because Fairphone 2 is a unique device. Not only that it has replaceable parts, but it uses Snapdragon 801, which is an outdated chipset. This means that an Oreo update will be almost impossible.
The Android 7 Nougat update was launched two years ago. Therefore, Fairphone 2 is late when it comes to this update. Many users believed that Android 6 Marshmallow would be the last update available for this device. However, that would have been a disappointment since the Fairphone company promised that their devices will be long-lasting ones.
The Android 7 Nougat update
The update has already been officially confirmed by Google via Google Mobile Services. We also know that the next users who will purchase Fairphone 2 smartphones will get them running Android 7 Nougat out of the box, which means that an update won’t be necessary. It remains to see whether the company plans to release a Fairphone 3 device. At the moment, a new smartphone might not be needed since the Fairphone 2 update is able to satisfy the needs of the users at the moment.
